Author Guidelines

International Journal of History and Philosophy of Medicine adheres to the Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitted to Biomedical Journals ( The authors are encouraged to register through the journal website ( and submit their manuscripts online. The initial review is expected to take no more than 3 weeks. A cover letter indicating that the authors have full responsibility for the submission and that the manuscript is not under simultaneous considerations elsewhere should be submitted together with the manuscript.

The manuscript must be prepared and submitted in Microsoft Word Format. Articles should contain Title page, Abstract, Main text and References. The main text should be organized in a manner that is easy to read and understand. The authors are welcome to use any headings and subheadings, which are appropriate. Each section should appear on a separate page. The source of grant, if any, must be acknowledged following conclusion.

The submissions for "Annotated Images" section should present original images (portraits, photographs or illustrations) with a brief description (<600 words and <10 references) and should reflect an important aspect related to the history of medicine. Photographs, either black and white or colored, should be submitted in either jpeg or tiff format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi. A typical submission should contain a Title page, Image(s), Description and References. Annotated Images should not have an abstract.

The full name of all authors, their highest academic degrees, affiliations and contact information of the corresponding author (name, address, phone/fax number and email) should be provided in the title page.

Figures and Tables should be numbered consecutively in Arabic numerals (Figure 1, Figure 2; Table 1, Table 2; etc.) and placed within the manuscript, not at the end. Each Figure should have a descriptive caption, and Tables should each have a brief title. Photographs, either black and white or colored, should be numbered as for other Figures and should be submitted in either jpeg or tiff format with a resolution of at least 300 dpi.

The references should be numbered in the order of their appearance, and cited in text with numerical superscripts. The name of all authors should be given if there are six or less authors. Otherwise, list the first six followed by "et al". References should be styled as follows:

The authors are responsible for the originality of the material and the accuracy of the content of their manuscripts. The manuscript should have not been published before either in part or in full or simultaneously submitted elsewhere. Any incompliance with the ethical principles could lead to immediate retraction of the manuscript.

If any part of the submission (e.g., Figures, Tables, etc.) includes copyrighted materials, the original source and the name of copyright holder should be explicitly stated in the manuscript. It is the authors' sole responsibility to obtain permission for the reproduction of copyrighted materials from the copyright holder. The editors and publisher have no such responsibility.


Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  2. The submission file is in Microsoft Word, RTF, or WordPerfect document file format.
  3. The text is double-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  4. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.
  5. The authors confirm that obtaining permission for use of the copyrighted materials in the manuscipt is their sole responsibility, and that such permission has been obtained ahead of submission.
  6. The authors confirm that they have specified the name, affiliation and email address for at least two potential reviewers in "COMMENTS FOR THE EDITOR" box below.

Copyright Notice

When submitting an article to International Journal of History and Philosophy of Medicine, the authors are provided with a checklist and are asked to confirm that the copyright of the article will automatically be transferred to the publisher (Rhazes, LLC.) upon acceptance of the manuscript. The authors have the right to use or distribute the final published article in any forum and for non-commercial purposes. Third parties may download the articles for their own personal (non-profit) use or for educational purposes. Permission for a third party to use any published material other than for not-for-profit, non-commercial purposes should be requested in writing from the Editor-in-Chief on behalf of the publisher. Any use of any published material by any party for any purpose must include acknowledgement of publication in this journal.
